Social movements

Feminist and LGBTQI+ movements have been at the forefront of societal change, championing equality and justice. Central to this struggle is challenging patriarchal gender norms, which perpetuate gender oppression and inequality. Our evidence highlights the transformative impact of their work in advancing gender equality across the globe.

Movements employ a diverse range of strategies to effect change. They advocate for legal and policy reforms, raise awareness through community education, and provide essential services to support the needs of vulnerable women and LGBTQI+ people. From occupying public spaces and designing innovative campaigns to lobbying governments and forging alliances, their tactics are as varied as they are impactful.

Art and social media have become two important tools for movements. Slacktivism, or digital activism, leverages the power of social media to amplify feminist messages and mobilize communities. Artivism, or art activism, utilizes the evocative power of art to challenge dominant narratives and spark critical reflection.

Below you will find publications by ALIGN and the wider ALIGN community of practice on feminist and LGBTQI+ movements and their impact on gender norm change. ALIGN’s content includes a feminist movements map and a wide range of reports, briefing notes and blogs that examine the impact of feminist movements on combating specific issues, such as GBV, or progress towards gender equality, more broadly.
