Feminist movements against GBV and their impact on gender norms

The Feminist movements against GBV and their impact on gender norms project examined how the work of feminist movements or organisations have contributed to the transformation of patriarchal gender norms that motivate and ‘justify’ gender-based violence (GBV). Between 2022 and 2024, ALIGN worked with partners in three locations – Colombia, Mexico, and West Africa – to strengthen the existing body of evidence on the contribution of feminist activism to end the gender norms underpinning GBV.  

Together the reports showcase the multifaceted nature of feminist activism to end GBV and its impact on gender norm change. The research examines the struggle to counter digital GBV in Mexico, and the challenges of accessing justice for victim-survivor in Colombia. The research draws attention to the constraints and achievements of activism to counter harmful gender norms in Sierra Leone and Senegal. Together the reports show why we must recognize how feminist movements are driving GBV-related gender norm change across the globe and support them in their efforts to bring about more equal and safe worlds.
