This article discusses the impact of global women's rights norms on local uptake of rights language to challenge harmful norms, from an international relations perspective. Drawing on evidence from Peru, China, India and the United States, the article demonstrates how norms about women's human rights are negotiated in local contexts through social movements and become 'vernacluarised' to new settings, making new norms, that are also tied to global narratives.
