The purpose of this webinar was to introduce the Social Norms Atlas, a new resource produced by the Learning Collaborative to Advance Normative Change. The Atlas features illustrative examples of related social norms, attitudes, behaviours, and resources for researchers and practitioners across ten sectors.
The webinar opened with an introduction to the Atlas followed by brief presentations from three featured sectors, and preview findings from a cross-sector analysis on underlying meta-norms. After these presentations, we opened the floor for a participant-driven panel discussion where participants put their questions to our presenters and discuss implications as a group. This webinar introduced a valuable resource on social norms to global development researchers and practitioners working on behaviour change and/or norm-shifting programming.

Background:
Social norms matter because they influence behaviour and often reinforce discrimination and social and gender inequities. When sustaining or shifting behaviour is a programme goal, researchers and practitioners need to understand how norms relate to behaviours in order to develop and implement effective programmes. The Social Norms Atlas provides a set of illustrative social norms pertaining to ten development sectors to assist users in translating social norms-related concepts into practical applications.
Key questions addressed in this webinar:
- What is the Social Norms Atlas?
- What content is featured in the atlas sectors?
- How can researchers and practitioners use this new tool in their work?
- What are some key social norms, attitudes and behaviours in three sectors?
- What are some of the meta-norms identified across these sectors?
