Co-education and the Erosion of Gender Stereotypes in the Zambian Copperbelt

This journal article looks at how single-sex and co-education impact on girls' and boys' gender beliefs and relations. Qualitative research in the Zambian Copperbelt reveals that co-education can be more conducive to gender equality. Learning alongside girls demonstrates that both sexes are equally competent thereby undermining gender stereotypes. This questions the assumption that single-sex education is better at enhancing girls' self-confidence and protecting them from male violence.
