Women, girls and disasters. A review for DFID

This review of the disaster and development literature aims to highlight the differential impact that disasters have on women and girls. It takes into consideration how existing gender norms and the specific needs of women and girls are considered throughout the disaster risk management cycle by looking at the current response from key international agencies and organisations to address these issues. Overall, this piece offers a useful background on key concepts pertaining to gendered vulnerability and risks, gendered capacities, and disasters’ impacts on socioeconomic outcomes including health, Violence Against Women and Girls, early and forced marriage, poverty, trafficking or migration.
