This paper explores the concept of the impact of 'local normative climates' on agency and agricultural livelihoods in Sub Saharan Africa. Taking evidence from 24 village cases from seven sub-Saharan African countries, it discusses how fluid normative expectations change and evolve differently based on gendered norms as well as being influenced by wider social and institutional changes.
